When is PNG the better choice?
- Editing in several rounds. Every time a JPG is saved it is compressed again and loses a little more detail. A PNG can be edited and saved repeatedly without that loss.
- Sites or apps that require PNG. Some upload forms, design tools and printing services only accept PNG files.
- Screenshots and graphics. Text, icons and sharp edges stay crisp in PNG, although converting won't remove blur already present in a JPG.
For sharing photos online or by email, JPG is usually the better format: the files are much smaller and open everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Is this JPG to PNG converter free?
Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermarks and no limit on how many images you convert.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion happens in your browser, on your device. Your images are never uploaded.
Will converting to PNG improve the image quality?
No. PNG saves the image exactly as it is, but it can't bring back detail that JPG compression already removed. What PNG does is prevent any further loss, which helps if you plan to edit and save the image again.
Why is the PNG file bigger than my JPG?
PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel instead of discarding detail the way JPG does. For photos, a PNG is often several times larger than the JPG it came from.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. JPG images can't contain transparency, so the PNG keeps the same background as your JPG. Converting the format doesn't remove the background.
Are photos from my phone kept the right way up?
Yes. Rotation information from your camera is applied, so portrait photos stay portrait. Other photo metadata, such as location and camera details, is removed.
Is there a file size limit?
You can convert JPG images up to 50 MB and up to 100 megapixels.
